Tunisia: EU Migration and Economic Deal Signed
The European Union (EU) and Tunisia have inked an agreement that will enhance economic relations between the two, including efforts to stem “irregular” migration.
The “strategic relationship” deal was signed on Sunday, 16 July, as a response to migration – specifically, those moving illegally – from the north African country across the Mediterranean to parts unknown in Europe.
Several dignitaries from the EU joined the memorandum proceedings at the Tunisian presidential palace in Carthage, Tunisia.
“Tunisia and the European Union are bound by our shared history and geography, and we share strategic interests,” said European Commission President, Ursula Von der Leyen. She lauded the agreement as a blueprint for “shared prosperity and stability.”
Part of the deal included £90 million set aside for anti-smuggling operations, enhancing border security and for returning illegal migrations.
Per the deal, investment will be focused on five pillars: macro-economic stability, trade and investment, migration and mobility, people-to-people links, and green energy transition.
